This weekend, I crafted a simple collage of my favorite young Japanese rock metal bands, each of which has sparked a global wave of influence. Inspired by their engaging figures, I picked one of the charismatic vocalists, Su-Metal, and decided to do a rough sketch on the journal page and finalized it on cold-press watercolor paper. Su-Metal is known as a vocalist of the iconic group BABYMETAL, shaping the metal rock scene with their “kawaii” (cute) songs and brutal instrumentals, winning hearts worldwide.
.*Materials I used for this journaling and drawing:
For Journal: Calligraphy type felt pen, Color Copics & 0.1-0.5 felt pens.
Graphic stickers and tapes.
Magazine cut-out images.
For Painting: Sakura Watercolors, Aquapens, regular paint brushes, Gold foils.
Cafe Latte & croissant

I thought Su-Metal, with her famous 'kitsune' fox mask, would be a great subject for my weekend drawing. I wanted to focus on the details while using a simplified drawing style that mimics old Japanese artwork, with gold foil in the background. I tried to create an image of her strong presence, the sharp lines of her silhouette, the power in her eyes, and the unique look of the fox mask, all of which come together to create a striking image I wanted to capture.

Japanese rock and metal, especially women bands, are capturing the world’s spotlight in their own unique way, setting themselves apart from typical music trends, such as K-pop. Once ruled by men and thunderous guitar riffs and rhythms, the genre is now being reinvented by a bold new generation in Japan.

Deep Dive into Japanese Rock and Metal
I have found myself drawn to groups like BABYMETAL, BAND-MAID, NEMOPHILA, and ASTERISM because they represent a "perfect storm" of technical mastery and stylistic fearlessness. Whether it’s the contrast of BAND-MAID’s maid aesthetics with their hard-rock grit, NEMOPHILA’s explosive "hell-metal" energy, or ASTERISM’s intricate instrumental shredding, these groups bring a new level of passion and musicianship that feels refreshing in a global scene.
The World of "Kawaii Metal"
At the forefront of this movement is BABYMETAL, the group that single-handedly pioneered the "Kawaii Metal" genre. By fusing the intense, crushing instrumentation of heavy metal with the melodic hooks and high-energy choreography of Japanese idol culture, they broke every traditional rule of the genre. What began as a bold experiment has turned into a global trend, proving that metal doesn't have to be dark to be heavy, instead it can be theatrical, powerful and visually stunning.
A New Era of Domination
The success of BABYMETAL has kicked the door wide open for a new generation. The "Japanese New Wave" is now dominating the global rock culture, with more bands arising to challenge the status quo.
BAND-MAID continues to sell out world tours with their "servant" persona and classic rock chops.
NEMOPHILA is bringing fierce, modern metalcore to massive festival stages.
ASTERISM is redefining what "New Generation" instrumental music sounds like.
These groups and other new J-Rock band, show how Japanese artists are influencing the future of rock. By mixing technical skill with a creative, open-minded approach, they are bringing new energy to rock and metal for fans around the world.
