Watercolor Pencil is fascinating
What really stands out about these pencils is how versatile they are. You can use them dry like regular colored pencils, dip the tip in water for bold, ink-like color, or blend the lines with a wet brush. This flexibility makes them easier to control and more approachable than traditional watercolors, which benefits users who prefer greater precision when placing colors and planning their work.
When I first tried watercolor pencils for drawing, I was fascinated by how they worked. They act as a bridge between drawing and painting, giving you the control of a pencil and the expressive look of watercolor. Unlike regular colored pencils, these have water-soluble cores. You can draw fine details lines, and then, blend the colors using wet brushes. It's both fun and practical to watch a crisp line melt into a smooth watercolor effect right on the paper.

For this reason, I usually bring just watercolor pencils, a waterbrush pen, and my sketchbook to the coffee shop for quick drawings, instead of carrying the whole gears like brushes, paint tubes, palettes, and mixing trays. This way is easier and makes my work feel more natural and relaxed than traditional methods.
The Artist's Loft watercolor pencil set is a strong option for beginners and provides excellent value. The pencils are affordable and come in bright colors that blend well with water. However, the pigment is not as concentrated as professional brands, and the pencils could be softer to allow for deeper colors with fewer layers. As I have only used this brand, I am interested in comparing it to others.
Below are additional brands I plan to try.

By the way, since my waterbrush pen pairs so well with watercolor pencils, I’m thinking of diving deeper into the pen’s features in my next product review.

Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer 12 Color Watercolor Pencil Set:
Known to their excellent lightfastness and dense pigment. Unlike budget pencils, the marks from Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer are designed to dissolve completely with water, leaving behind a smooth, professional watercolor wash without "phantom" pencil lines.

Derwent Inktense Pencils 12 Watercolor Set:
These are unique because they use an ink-based pigment rather than traditional watercolor. Once a wash of Derwent Inktense dries, it becomes permanent, allowing you to layer new colors on top without lifting the previous layer.
Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle Pencil Set:
These are often cited as the highest tier available, boasting a creamy, soft texture and maximum pigment concentration. They dissolve instantly upon contact with water, making them feel more like "paint in a stick" than a pencil.
