Imaginary Creatures

Creating an imaginative creature. Your journal can become a wild zoo of your imagination, where each new character you invent might even mirror your moods.

I chose to draw an imaginary insect this time because insects have so many vibrant colors, shiny wing patterns, and interesting textures like exoskeletons and antennae. It's fun to focus on these details, play around, and come up with new and beautiful creatures that spark creativity.

.*Materials I used for today's journaling:

  • 1.0 & 0.5 black felt pens

  • Brush tip pens

  • Cutouts from the magazines.

  • Graphic tapes and graphic stickers

  • Soft-type color pencils

  • Background music

  • Afternoon latte

Drawing imaginary creatures boosts creativity by removing, real-world constraints, allowing for free exploration of unique shapes, colors, and personalities. It acts as a mental exercise to strengthen brainstorming and problem-solving skills, while also serving as a relaxing, therapeutic outlet that reduces stress and encourages emotional expression.

Here are a few more reasons why drawing imaginary creatures can be fun and rewarding:

  • Endless Variation: It boosts creativity and imagination because you get to mix familiar things together in new and unique ways.

  • Stress Reduction: Drawing fantastical creatures can help you express your feelings and even build empathy. It stimulates the brain’s reward centers, triggering the release of dopamine and serotonin, which naturally alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • World-Building: Drawing imaginary creatures also lets you start building your own worlds. Even if I haven’t made a whole world of new creatures yet, I like to imagine how each one lives, what it eats, where it sleeps, and how it interacts. This makes my stories feel more real and interesting.
