Hip Hop Dancer

Sketching a single curved line that represents the flow of the dancer's spine and movement

But today after watching some of the competitions, I was inspired to draw an imaginative dancer and add the printout to my journal, surrounded with cut-out of brilliant colored image, random graphics and lettering to capture the movement and message of hip-hop, which I find compelling.

Since hip-hop emphasizes weight and momentum, I first sketch a single curved line to represent the dancer’s spine and movement and then drew loose-fitting clothes that helps emphasize the style.

.*Materials I used for today's journaling:

  • Sakura Watercolor & brush set.

  • STAedtler Double-Ended Fiber-Tip Pens

  • Watercolor sketchbooks feature 100% cotton, 200gsm cold-press paper.

  • Cutouts from the magazines.

  • Graphic stickers

  • Soft-type color pencils for retouch.

  • Background music

While I was randomly browsing YouTube today, I came across a series of hip-hop dance sites that caught my eye for a while. I know there are hip-hop competitions on the streets and even during big events like the Olympics and the World Hip Hop Dance Championship, which I thought were very athletic and cool, but I haven’t pursued drawing them.

Hints of how viewing through both digital and analog media can suddenly spark your creativity, making you eager to sketch the scenes and fill your journal with them.

  • Instant Inspiration: YouTube and social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest provide a "treasure" of diverse visual contents offering immediate reference points for your sketches.

  • Low Stakes, High Reward: Using social media as a casual prompt allows you to experiment with different style of drawings without the commitment of a formal art project.

  • Building Your Style: Seeing a wide range of images and drawing styles online and offline will help you learn new techniques and eventually find your own authentic creative voice.
